Introduction

A good way to get attention to the important things we want to say and do is to organise Action Week – one week when AEGEE locals all over Europe can Take Action to improve their education.
Education Action Week aims to:

  • attracting young people to the topic of education and learning,
  • informing them about different aspects and ways of education and learning,
  • encouraging to think about education and learning and contribute to improvement.

In short words it’s about introducing different ways how to make your education more interesting, high-grade and fun and putting these ways into practice.

The name and theme

The official name is Education Action Week, but taking into account the peculiarity of different language and sound of words, it is up to organising antenna to modify the name to sound best in their native language.
As education is quite broad as such, here are some key points that the Action Week could more concentrate on:

  • concept of lifelong learning
  • importance of non-formal education
  • Bologna Process
  • student mobility

When?

21st -27th October 2007
Action can last whole week, during 1-2 days or in a form of weekend-conference – antenna can choose it according to its needs and possibilities.

Why that time?

It is one month before and 6 years after the European Commission adopted a Communication on Making a European Area of Lifelong Learning a Reality (21st Nov, 2001).
As semesters start on different times in different parts of Europe, we tried to select time most fit to everybody – universities often revising their work and students having energy from summer

Aims

  • Provide information about Bologna Process (the parts that affect students, that cause changes, where to find more information).
  • Provide information about concept of life-long learning (what it means, and what programmes for this exist – in EU and in the respective countries).
  • Raise awareness about existing NGOs dealing with non-formal education and the importance of non-formal education, the possibilities to combine it with formal education.
  • Show and promote interactive study methods.
  • Form a platform of communication between active students (student NGOs) and university stakeholders that would be basis for going cooperation.

Expected results

  • Putting students think how are they actually learning, how they define education, what it gives/should give them, how to reach the “ideal education”.
  • Students getting interested in the subjects (Bologna Process, life-long learning, non-formal education, ways to raise the quality of their education), asking questions and for more information, willing to take action and contribute.
  • Better cooperation between student organisations in order to improve the quality of education.
  • Universities getting interested in cooperation with students and willing to have ongoing communication, constructive meetings and discussions taking place.
  • Generation of new ideas how to improve the quality of education and implementing at least few of them.
  • Public attention to Action Week and through that recognition non-formal education, the importance of student organisations (AEGEE).

What EDUN team offers You?

  • To give you the idea, what is it all about, you can soon find here some background information (including glossary of terminology, so you won’t get lost :)) and links about non-formal education, lifelong learning, Bologna Process, etc.
  • To get your ideas going, we have listed some activities and sample Education Action Weeks (EAW) that you can use.
  • To show you that it’s not difficult, we have also brought out 15 steps how to organise EAW.
  • AEGEE has many partners and friends in European and national levels – we can help you to find partners for your EAW.
  • While organizing EAW, you can always turn to us for help – to give ideas for workshop or discussion themes, speakers, to comment and develop your plans.
  • Soon it will be possible to download poster for EAW, some brochures and materials that you can distribute to the participants of your event.
  • Visibility - we will show on our web page all the antennae who are organising EAWs and will publish also the outcomes of your activities. Plus we have some surprises for you in terms of getting noticed outside AEGEE ;)
