From the press conference earlier today, a very interesting speech from Commissioner László Andor on the Social Situation Yearly Review 2012. The speech was made at an event to launch the second Employment and Social Situation Yearly Review, which I will also send around. Some highlights include:
Youth Employment 

The skills mismatch problem is particularly acute for the 7.5 million young Europeans between 15 and 24 who are unemployed or not in any form of education or training (so-called NEETs).

Plans for “youth guarantee” schemes to ensure that no young person in the EU is without a job for more than four months won strong support in the Employment and Social Affairs Committee on Tuesday. MEPs voted a resolution calling on EU employment ministers to agree in February 2013 to a Council recommendation that all member states introduce these schemes.

European Commission launches set of measures to tackle youth unemployment, now it’s time to invest in youth!

Brussels, 5th December 2012 // Youth Forum welcomes the concrete measures to tackle unemployment proposed in the Youth Employment Package launched today. However, to ensure the implementation of the scheme, the commitment must be both political as well as financial and replicated by Member States. The enormous cost of youth unemployment, estimated at €153 billion per year, was highlighted earlier this year by Eurofound, urging a clear need for investment in youth. The Youth Employment Package launched today by the European Commission tackles some concrete challenges of combating rising youth unemployment in Europe with efforts focusing on the access to labour market, early school-leaving, the transition from education to work, labour market segmentation the skills mismatch and mobility obstacles.

Latest Employment Figures

Both the adult and youth unemployment rates have increased with the adult rate at 11.6% and the youth unemployment rate at 22.8%.

In September 2012, 5.520 million young persons (under 25) were unemployed in the EU27 , of whom 3.493 million were in the euro area . Compared with September 2011, youth unemployment rose by 164 000 in the EU27 and by 275 000 in the euro area . In September 2012, the youth unemployment rate was 22.8% in the EU27 and 23.3% in the euro area , compared with 21.7% and 21.0% respectively in September 2011. In September 2012 the lowest rates were observed in Germany (8.0%), the Netherlands (9.7%) and Austria (9.9%), and the highest in Greece (55.6% in July 2012) and Spain (54.2%).
