Youth Summit calls for greater action to provide quality jobs

Young people across Europe gathered in Paris to discuss and propose bold solutions to tackle the on-going youth unemployment crisis. The Youth Summit on Quality Jobs was held to coincide with the intergovernmental conference that EU leaders attended to discuss the same topic area.

Youth Forum Interview with Europarl TV

European Youth Forum Policy Paper on Employment

The youth unemployment crisis has had a profound effect on young people and the societies in which they live. Youth unemployment is a global issue that threatens to undermine the very fabric of our society. More than 75 million young people are unemployed internationally and in Europe close to one in four young people are out of work.

As a result of growing youth unemployment, young people are experiencing increased levels of poverty and social exclusion, and there is a widening economic gap between older and younger generations.

UK releases framework on new traineeship scheme

The UK last week released a government framework detailing a new traineeship scheme. Whilst the scheme has a strong emphasis on the quality of traineeships, and their educational purpose, the remuneration of trainees is not part of the scheme’s regulations:
“Employers are not required to pay young people for the work placement under the traineeship. Traineeships fall under an exemption to the National Minimum Wage. We would encourage, but do not require, employers to consider providing trainees with support to meet their travel or meal costs.” (p.23)

Work on Youth Guarantee: the practice of the National Youth Council of Ireland

The National Youth Council of Ireland has been doing a lot of work on a national level on the youth guarantee and has been working closely with the Youth Forum on youth employment in the context of Ireland’s Presidency of the EU.
 NYCI have launched a Fact-sheet on the youth guarantee in Ireland and have been strongly advocating the policy to both the government and opposition parties. Currently NYCI and the Spanish Youth Council have produced materials on the youth guarantee nationally and many other youth councils have been writing to government Ministers and advocating the potential benefits of the youth guarantee in their country.
