Quo Vadis Europe?
"Enlargement"- a word that is
filling headlines, European agendas, conference titles, politicians plans
The most extensive enlargement of the European
Union is about to change the European political map in the coming years. Thirteen counties
(Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland,
Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Turkey) are preparing to enter the EU. The current members
of the EU must evaluate the consequences of opening their borders, the shift in political
and economic balance in the EU and Europe and the reform of the EU institutions? Will
there be a "United States of Europe"?
Applicant countries have to redefine their relations with their
neighbouring countries that will remain outside the EU. What changes will take place in
their relationship with these countries? What will they gain out of the free market
system? What will they lose? What about the amendments in the current educational
programmes? Will the new EU frontiers change its role in the world?
