Essay Contest

Essay competition finished: WINNERS KNOWN !!

AEGEE organised in 1997 an essay competition for young people in Europe about the EMU and the introduction of the euro.

In order to make students and pupils aware of the EMU and its implications, AEGEE asked young people to write down their thoughts, expectations, hopes and fears concerning the EMU. AEGEE has sent posters to over 2500 higher education institutes in Europe.

In February and March 1998 the evaluation took place. The first round was done by five groups of students (Aix-en-Provence, Barcelona, London, München and Udine). On the 2nd of March 1998, the final evaluation took place in Brussels. The panel members were:

Graham Watson, MEP
Jacky Davis, Editor European Voice
Günther Pauls, European Commission, DG X, Euro task force
Pascaline Wynand, Professor Institute European Studies
Franck Biancheri, president Prometheus-Europe and founder AEGEE

The panel members selected six essays. The winners are:

1st Price:1000 ECUJustus Schoenlau(Germany)
2nd Price:Gianluca Rezzano(Italy)
3rd Price:Josep A. Xurigué(Spain)
4th Price:Johan Bern(Sweden)
5th Price:Nicolas Tribut(France)
Special price:Ksenija Simic(Yugoslavia)

The winner invited to Brussels to receive his price. AEGEE combined this with the presentation of the results of the project in May.

The special price: she invited by Graham Watson at the European Parliament.

The evaluation criteria were:

  • personal opinion
  • originality
  • consistency

In other words: new ideas; personal approach; structured and convincing argumentation; writing style and form; analysis.
